Getting rid of dust mites from your mattress, bed and bedding

Remove all of the bedding from all of the beds in your house. Beds and bedding are a brilliant place for dust mites to breed, they like to live in warm areas, especially areas where humans or animals dwell.

Once all of your bedding has been removed make sure you wash them. If you can wash them on a hot wash. Make sure to include comforters, mattress toppers, pillow cases and blankets.

Make sure that once all of your bedding has been washed you then dry it in a tumble dryer, the heat from this kills any dust mites that may have survived in the washing process.

If you have any pillows on your bed that are more than 12 months old you should consider throwing them away. Your pillows weight could be 15% dead dust mites and dust mite weight, so it would be hygienic if you were to throw it away.

Use a Dust Mite Stopper Spray on your mattress and bedding, this kills the remainder of dust mites from your bed, if you have a large amount of dust mites in your bed you should consider repeating this process every week until the amount of dust mites is reduced. Dust Mite Stopper Spray is available from Home and About.

How to get rid of dust mites from your floors and carpets

You should consider buying a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, if you do not already own one. (HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. A HEPA filter is a type of mechanical air filter; it works by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and tobacco smoke.)

You should vacuum your home several times a week  to reduce the risk of dust mite eggs hatching. Your vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter will also be able to pick up any droppings that dust mites leave behind.  REMEMBER: You should replace your HEPA filter every year or so.

Carpet is a perfect breeding ground for dust mites, some people with more serious dust mite allergies may wish to replace their carpet with linoleum, laminate or hardwood flooring.

It may be a good idea for you to steam clean your carpets regularly if you have access to a steam cleaner. The heat from the steam is a very effective way to kill dust mites and eggs. If you are to use a steam cleaner on your carpet you may want to use some Your Choice Dust Mite Stopper afterwards so that you know there is little chance any dust mites will survive this heavy cleanse.

How to get rid of dust mites if you have pets

Make sure that you brush your pets at least once a day, it is a good idea to brush your pets outside. Brushing them outside will reduce the risk of spreading dander around your home. When brushing your pets hair, make sure you use a stroke that goes with the hair and also use a stroke that goes against the growth of the hair too. this helps eliminate the amount of free falling dander.

Make sure you vacuum the areas that your pets like to go frequently, these areas will have a greater amount of dander, therefore creating a better habitat for dust mites to reside and breed.

You should make sure you replace pet bedding regularly, like human beds these are a perfect breeding ground for the dust mites.

Always make sure that you do not let pets into your bedroom, this will make it almost impossible to eliminate the dust mite problem you may have.
