How to Clean Your Windows

Nothing says “Dirty Home” like dirty windows. If you saw dirty windows from the outside of your neighbour’s house, you would automatically presume that the house is probably going to be dirty inside.

Having dirty windows in your home obstructs your view of the outside world and also restricts the amount of sunlight shining into your home.

Some people dread the task of cleaning their windows, but it doesn’t have to be a tough task, not with the right know-how.

In this guide we will show you a few ways to get the job done effectively.

Microfiber Cloths

Microfiber cloths are a dream to clean windows with, just using a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with water can be used to spot clean fingerprints and smudges of your windows.

For thorough cleaning (which should be done 2/3 times a year) we recommend using an old tea towel and a bucket of water with a couple of drops of dishwashing detergent.

Window Cleaning Method 1:

Step One:

Wet the tea towel through with the solution in the bucket and wash down the exterior of your windows, this solution works brilliantly to remove scum, algae and grime that may have built up.

Step Two:

Dry the windows using your microfiber cloth, this will leave your windows clean, but might leave a few streak marks.

Step Three:

You can use a homemade glass cleaning solution or you can use a Traditional Glass Cleaner (Specially formulated to leave your windows with a streak free shine.)

Cleaning Tip: To make it easier to see areas you may have missed you can use horizontal stokes when cleaning the interior windows and vertical strokes on the windows exterior.

Squeegee Method

Even though it’s perfectly fine to use the hand cleaning method, if you are going to be cleaning a lot of windows it might be a good idea to give your arms a rest and use a squeegee. Using a squeegee with a rubber-edge and a sponge with the same dish detergent solution as above might save you some time and your arms will thank you.

Window Cleaning Method 2:
Step One:

Using the sponge, apply the dish detergent solution to the window you wish to clean, remember you don’t have to be neat, just make sure you tackle the debris, grime and algae that may have formed.

Step Two:

Remove the water from the windows using the rubber edge of the squeegee. Make sure that you use a cloth or an old towel to wipe the rubber edge of the squeegee after each stroke, this keeps any dirt and grime that may cause streaking to a minimum. Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean up any excess water.

Cleaning Tip: If you wish to clean the exterior sills you can use the same detergent solution that you used on the windows. Alternatively if you have uPVC window frames you could restore them to their original shiny glory by using our uPVC Cleaner, this can be used on interior and exterior sills, conservatories, drain pipes and even garden furniture.
